HOUSEHOLDERS are being given another chance to get better priced energy deals.

Over 1,700 residents from within Wigan borough signed up to the Greater Manchester Fair Energy scheme when it was launched in January, and some will save as much as £900 a year on their bills.

Sarah Bellis, a quality control chemist from Tyldesley, who lives with her partner and two dogs, was one of the first to register for the previous scheme.

Twenty-eight-year old Sarah said: “I registered online on my mobile phone. It was really easy. People coming together to save money is a great idea.

“We’ve got to do something because energy bills are becoming so expensive. I’ve lived in my house for the three years and I’ve noticed in that time my monthly bills have gone up by more than £25. You start to wonder where it will end.”

Cllr Chris Ready, Wigan Council cabinet member for housing, says: “We all know the cost of heating our homes has gone through the roof. Fuel poverty is a real problem in our borough. Residents are struggling to keep warm and pay their bills.

“This is a way for us all to work together and try to do something positive about high energy prices. I’d encourage residents to sign-up before the deadline passes.”

Those who missed out now have the opportunity to join a second scheme. See gmfairenergy.com or call 0800 009 3363 before April 8.

They will be placed into a ‘reverse auction’ and will be offered new energy deals which they can either accept or reject.

Although it is targeted at people living in Greater Manchester, the scheme will be open to anyone in the UK to join and unlike many other schemes, will be open to people on pre-payment meters.
