Hints and clues as to where the balls are hidden will be put on social media. Fans can follow the trail on Twitter at #findourballs.

Councillor Chris Ready, Wigan Council cabinet member for leisure and sport, said: “I reckon there’s going to be a quite a clamour to find these balls. Even though the council is hiding one, I’m afraid I have no insider information as to where they’re going to be. I wouldn’t mind finding one myself.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to be hosting two matches in the borough during the World Cup. It’s a major international tournament and it’s taking place right on our doorstep. For a sports-mad borough like this, it doesn’t get any better.”

RLWC2013 general manager Sally Bolton said: “To pass the 100 days to go milestone is truly exciting and we are celebrating in style with the #findourballs competition.

“We’ve engaged our RLWC2013 hosts, clubs in the Super League and Championships, and an impressive panel of celebrity fans, and we’re looking forward to interacting with a wide range of supporters.”
