VANDALS have destroyed apple trees at a Leigh park.
Community group The Friends of Lilford Park have been involved in upgrading the popular Leigh amenity off The Avenue and police are now monitoring the situation.
A Friends spokesman said: “We are continuing to experience nuisance vandalism in the park. Two wheelie bin were set on fire on the five-a-side pitch and there has been wanton destruction of the newly planted apple trees on the old rugby field.
“Stone throwing is also proving to be a problem, with the new bench crescent being targeted and paintwork damaged. As a result we are holding back on any further work here until this has also been dealt with.”
The group plans to purchase garden tools and protective clothing for volunteers after receiving a £750 boost from Wigan’s Brighter Borough fund secured through Clrs Myra Whiteside and Anita Thorpe.
The 5 Boroughs Mental Health Trust is keen to get involved with park projects for recovering patients and NHS funding may be available for work programmes.
