THERE just isn’t a mountain high enough that one Atherton fundraiser could not conquer.

Peter Bailey has completed an Iron Man challenge, raced through three triathlons, two marathons and cycled from Manchester to Blackpool and back this year but they were only to raise funds for his latest exploit, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

His charity mission has seen him raise £14,500 for The Christie and the 25-year-old is hoping he can raise a final £500 before the end of the year.

The cashier for Barclays bank in Horwich said: “The expedition was arranged by my work and each of us had to raise £5,000 but my fundraising got a bit out of hand. It took eight months of training pretty much every day to do it so I am taking December off.

“I’d rather complete an Iron Man everyday for two weeks then climb Kilimanjaro again. It was six days of solid walking and sometimes in the pitch black.

“There were 20 of us from Barclays that did it. None of us knew each other at the start but we were unsurprisingly close by the end.”

Peter hasn’t learnt his lesson though and next year plans to climb Ben Nevis in the dark and complete the Three Peaks Challenge – in the middle of cycling from John O’Groats to Lands End and back.

Peter said: “I have always enjoyed doing things for charity and when I heard about the Kilimanjaro climb I thought why not step it up a notch. I spent a lot of this year training but right now my main form of exercise is walking to the pub and back.

“What I would really like to do in the future is reach the summit of Everest and trek Machu Picchu but I need to wait until I can afford them.”
