A 20-YEAR-OLD man is in hospital after being hit by a car on the East Lancs Road this morning.

Police want to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision, which happened at 2.40am today, Saturday.

The pedestrian was struck by a Mercedes E320 travelling westbound on the A580 at Astley.

He suffered a serious head injury and a broken leg and was taken to Salford Royal Hospital. His injuries are described as serious but not life threatening.

The driver of the Mercedes, a 38-year-old man from Leigh, was not hurt.

Traffic officers closed the westbound A580 from the junction with Higher Green Lane at Astley while they investigated the scene. The road was reopened shortly after 5am.

Roads policing officers are now appealing for any witnesses to call 0161 856 4742.
