Robbers attack two men in Atherton home
8:58am Wednesday 29th January 2014 in NW
MACHETE wielding robbers stormed into a home and attacked two men.
The four robbers, who wore balaclavas, made off with an iPad and a mobile phone.
The four criminals walked through the front door and into the living room of a Sumner Street home in Atherton where the 22-year-old victim’s partner and baby were on Thursday, January 16.
As the victim walked into the living room he and his friend were pushed into the kitchen and set upon by the men. They were threatened by one of the men who was wielding a machete. He made demands for cash.
One of the men was hit across the back of the head with a coffee jar.
The man with a machete is described as being white, olive skinned, in his late 20s, around 6ft and of medium build. He had short dark hair, was clean shaven, wore black jacket with the hood up and spoke with a local accent.
Det Con Darren Reid, from Wigan East Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “The victim’s partner was the first to see these four men with balaclavas in her home and her natural concern was for her baby. The woman and her child were not hurt but have been left shaken.
“Thanks to a detailed description, we have been able to create an e-fit of the main offender. If you recognise him or believe you may have seen this man leave the house that night, to contact us.”
A 69-year-old, of Sumner Street, said: “I am shocked to hear a robbery has taken place.
"A lot of the people who live in the area have lived here for many years and it’s usually a quiet place to be. It makes you worry hearing that something like that has happened on your doorstep.”
A woman, aged 33, said: “I saw police cars but I thought it was a family dispute initially. I never expected it to be so serious.
"I don’t know what happened but people often leave their doors unlocked but you just can’t take that risk now. I hope the family is ok. It is frightening.”
