A MUM is preparing to cycle hundreds of miles in stifling temperatures in memory of her teenage son.

Julie Fletcher is hoping to raise £4,000 for CLIC Sargent, a charity that supported the family after her son Harry Holmes was diagnosed with a very rare form of liver cancer - fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma - just after his 15th birthday.

Despite being given only three months to live, he fought courageously for nearly two years but sadly died in June 2013, aged 16.

The 45-year-old will spend 12 days cycling through Vietnam and Cambodia in October for the charity which provided her family with practical and financial help.

Julie, a receptionist, of Car Bank Street, Atherton, said: "This challenge is not something I would usually do.

"I think Harry would have laughed his socks off at the idea of it but I know he would have been proud of me too.

"It was a very difficult time when Harry was ill.

"CLIC Sargent was there to point me in the right direction and took the pressure off practical things.

"We had a lovely social worker from the charity which gave us a lot of support.

"All I wanted was for my son to get better.

"You're so spaced out by it all you don't know whether you're coming or going."

The charity also sent the family on holiday before the former Westleigh High School pupil's death.

"Harry never complained about anything there and it was great that we had the chance to have that last holiday together as a family," Julie added.

Along with Harry's brother Josh, aged 24, Julie is arranging several fundraising events in the coming months.

There will be a reiki day on Saturday, March 15, at New Leaf/Serenity in Tyldesley from 10am-4pm.
