Calls to restore iconic Bacup building in sad decline

The Bolton News: The Regal, former cinema and bingo hall, The Regal, former cinema and bingo hall,

COMMUNITYY leaders in Bacup have called for improvements to be made to one of the town’s most iconic buildings.

Paul Greenwood, of Bacup Pride, and Wendy Lord, of Bacup Natural History Society, labelled the disused Regal Cinema, in Burnley Road, as an ‘eyesore’.

The building, owned by property developer B&E Boys, has been vacant since the turn of the century and subjected to a spate of graffiti.

Ms Lord said the ‘whole town’ would like to see something done with the site, which had originally housed a public hall before the cinema opened in 1931.

She said: “I think that everybody in Bacup would like to see something done with it. There was talk of development a while back but nothing materialised.

“I don’t know what it’s like inside - the last time I was there was when it was a bingo hall – I agree with Bacup Pride that it does need work.

“I don’t think it’s one of the buildings that the THI (Townscape Heritage Initiative) money is earmarked for.

In 2005,London businessman Ahmed Khashaba bought the building at an auction, but disposed of it in 2007 following a critical television documentary into the acquisition.

B&E Boys lodged a planning application in 2009 to demolish part of the cinema, but it was refused by Rossendale Council on the grounds that it would ‘be harmful to the character and appearance’ of the Bacup Town Centre Conservation Area.

Coun Jimmy Eaton said B&E Boys, based in Todd Carr Road, Waterfoot, had ‘a good track record’ of looking after buildings.

No-one from B&E Boys was available to comment.

It is an eyesore but what is the point of spending say
£2m on renovation? The Bacup IHT project requires owners to
contribute to the cost and it seems that Boys don't want to cough up.
Just as important, what good would an empty
theatre/bingo hall serve. Hebden Brisge and Todmorden
hzve community theatees or cinemas but people in Bacup do
not seem to want such activiyies

Can Wendy suggest who would pay for renovation? Demolition is the answer.

Why should I suggest who should pay for renovation? Where in the above article do I say it should be renovated? I was asked by the LET what I thought about the building what they have printed me saying is more or less correct, except the comment about " work needing doing" which i said in relation to doing something about the graffiti, which as I understand it is why Paul Greenwood from Bacup Pride contacted the LET in the first place.

The headline talks about "restoring" the building. The first paragraphs mention "improvements". Neither of these statements would sum up the removal of graffiti. Yes, the facade is a mess, the inside is derelict. Demolish it. If the council wants to preserve it then they should have a very good reason. Like many of these old buildings that historians want improved or kept standing (such as Rossendale hospital) when a building has outlived its purpose and its useful life it should go.

Unless I have suddenly been promoted to the editor of the LET which I can assure you I haven't I have no say nor does anyone else for that matter, who is asked to give a comment what the headline will be. How ridiculous!!! So I will say it again.. I have not said anywhere in this article whether it be first paragraph second paragraph or anywhere else for that matter that the Regal should be saved.

In an earlier posting Wendy said "What they have printed is more or less correct. "
Now she says that the reporting is not the way she would have phrased it.
that case it is another example of the LT mangling a story.

I think that Bacup Pride should campaign for the bulldozers to demolish Bacup's eyesores and not just cleaning up graffiti.

First of all you say what they quoted you as saying was more or less correct. The fact that I did not include the word Me in my paraphrase is irrelevant.
Will you campaign for demolition or do you just want the grafiti scrubbed off?
Like many local historians, the ones in Rossendale need to stop using rose-coloured glasses when it comes to Owd Bacup. The town died 50 years ago.
