THE council has promised to give residents regular updates as work on the guided busway closes a main Tyldesley road.

Major disruption is expected from Monday when Hough Lane will be closed to traffic but Wigan Council will be providing regular updates on their website and through social media.

The road will be closed from number 11 to 14 until September 26 while National Grid replaces the old high pressure pipe as part of work on Transport for Greater Manchester’s guided busway.

Mark Tilley, assistant director for infrastructure at Wigan Council, said: “I understand the inconvenience the closure of Hough Lane will cause to residents, which is why we’ve been speaking to TfGM to find ways to reduce as much disruption as possible during the construction of the busway.

“I know TfGM have regularly consulted with residents and have made amendments to the scheme according to their views.”

The road closure will not affect pedestrian access and a footway will be available across the bridge at all times during this work allowing pedestrians and dismounted cyclists to continue to use the route.

The alternative route for traffic will be Sale Lane, Mosley Common Road, East Lancashire Road, Chaddock Lane and Manchester Road.

Diversion signs will be in place in advance of the closure.

Both the council and TfGM have apologised for the disruption that the road closure will cause.

Wigan Council will be providing regular updates about the bridge closure via their roadworks bulletin at wigan.gov.uk and their social media channels, facebook.com/wigancouncil and twitter.com/wigancouncil to keep residents up to date with the latest news.
