SIR Elton John will take to the stage at Leigh Sports Village on Saturday to perform the first gig in his summer tour.

The superstar will entertain an almost sell-out crowd with some of his classic tracks such as Rocket Man and Your Song as well as newer songs from his latest album The Diving Board.

Elton’s production team arrived on Monday to begin preparing the pitch and setting up for his arrival on Saturday.

Speaking to the Journal on Tuesday, LSV chief executive Simon Toon said: “We are very excited and very pleased with the response from the community.

“Most of the hospitality boxes have gone to businesses in the town. We are fast approaching a sell-out but what is great is the buzz around the sports village and the town centre – it is the talk of the town.

“Lots of people arrived on the site today setting up before Elton himself arrives on Saturday.

“It is another world class event for the people of Leigh which was always the intention of the sports village – to provide people with different activities. It will put Leigh back on the map.”

Supporting Elton will be Bright Light Bright Light, a welsh electronic pop musician.

There are 38 tickets still available from the reception at Leigh Sports Village that require no booking fee and will be available until 7pm tomorrow, Friday.

There will be a very limited number of tickets available at the event box-office in front of the West Stand which will be open from 12.30pm until approximately 8.30pm for cash or credit card purchases.
