A RESIDENTS association is in need of the public’s support to help its plans to refurbish a park.

Braithwaite Park in Lowton is in desperate need of new equipment according to Braithwaite Residents Association.

The group has applied for funding from environment trust Viridor but needs to prove it has the public’s support to be successful.

The association’s treasurer Paul Fiddler said: “The park is insufficient for the size of the estate – the play area has four items for around 1,000 houses.

“It also has a sand floor which hides all kinds of nasty things such as broken glass.

“There is a real need for something to be done. It is such a big space but only a small corner is used.”

The group has already secured funding from Wigan Council but wants to make the park a place that all ages can enjoy by taking the total up to £130,000 with a grant from Viridor.

“We are looking to enhance the range of equipment and appeal to all age ranges by also adding exercise equipment,” said Paul.

“We are looking to expand quite significantly and are asking people to email in to show their support so we can demonstrate to Viridor.

“This is quite important as it could determine or will at least have a big say in whether we get the funding or not.

“There is nothing there to attract people at the moment – I know people who would rather get in their cars and drive to other parks.

“If the application is successful we will need to make a contribution in order to release the funding so we are looking for ideas from residents and business who might be willing to help raise money with us.”
