A SCHOOL’S first attempt at space exploration has been a success.

A stratospheric explorer, launched by pupils at Bedford High School as part of a summer science project in August has returned to earth – in the middle of the North Sea.

The specially designed high altitude balloon called Mission Rise floated 36 kilometres straight up to take video of the edge of space before falling back to earth.

It was hoped that the balloon would return somewhere in the north west but it was picked up by a rescue boat 133 miles east of Aberdeen after being spotted by oil rig workers.
