PUPILS who sped to victory at a school cross county championship are now preparing for their next challenge.

More than 88 primary school teams and 96 secondary school teams spent the day at Leigh Harriers for the Wigan Borough Schools Cross Country Championships.

The Harriers are working in partnership with School Games Organisers to provide competitions for school children that enable them to progress to competitions such as the Greater Manchester Cross Country Championships.

The event was supported by volunteers from Wigan and Leigh College and Leigh Centurions.

Organiser Lesley McGreevy said: "This gives the students real ‘hands-on experience’ of what is required to run an event of this size. Everyone ran a great race and there were some amazing individual and team performances.

"The overall top twenty primary boys and girls and the top fifteen at each secondary age group will be invited to represent the borough in March at the Greater Manchester Cross Country Championships.

"We’d like to wish all the qualifiers good luck."
