A PENSIONER was knocked to the ground by a robber who snatched her handbag in Leigh.

The 73-year-old victim was walking along Holden Road at about 4.30pm yesterday, Friday, when the offender approached her from behind and grabbed hold of her handbag.

The woman was knocked to the ground during the struggle and a number of people who saw what happened came to her aid, prompting the offender to run off with the bag.

The woman received treatment for minor head injuries.

Sgt Melanie Roberts said: “Targeting a pensioner in this way is a contemptible and cowardly thing to do and I would urge anyone who knows the identity of the person responsible to call us.

“A number of people saw what happened and were able to rush to her aid and thankfully she wasn’t seriously injured.”

Anyone with information about the incident or person responsible is asked to call the neighbourhood policing team at Leigh on 0161 856 7225, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
