A BLOCK of flats in Leigh was evacuated after a small fire started in a motion sensor.

The occupants of 12 apartments in Inglenook Court, off Old Hall Mill Lane, were evacuated after fire alarms went off in the building at around 10.45pm last night.

Firefighters from Atherton were called to the fire, which was already out by the time they got there.

It is believed the blaze, which started in a motion sensor for the ground floor entrance lights and luckily did not spread, was caused by an electrical fault.

Crew Manager Dave Morris said: “This has once again proved the importance of working smoke alarms and adequate fire safety precautions, which ensured that this was not a major fire and no one was injured.

“As always at this time of year we remind people to switch off their Christmas lights at night, burn candles safely and check on elderly relatives and neighbours regularly.”
