A WASHING machine sparked a fire in Leigh home.

Firefighters were called to Hurst Street at around 1pm today, Monday, to after the resident noticed smoke coming from the machine.

The fire was out when a crew from Atherton fire station arrived.

Watch manager Dave Holden said: “The lady noticed smoke coming from her washing machine and straight away disconnected it which was the right thing to do.

“She evacuated herself and waited for the crews to arrive. Thankfully the fire was already out so we just disconnected all the wires and took the washing machine out.

“There was only damage to the internally wiring of the machine and no damage caused by the fire or the smoke to the property.

“The resident was uninjured if a little bit frightened.”

The crew completed a home safety check before leaving the property.
