A YELLOW warning for snow has been issued by the Met Office as the cold snap is expected to worsen.
The warning has been issued for parts of the North West including Leigh as outbreaks of sleet and snow are expected to reach the area tonight and continue into tomorrow morning.
Around two to five centre metres of snow is expected to settle in some areas, especially on higher ground and the Met Office has warned that there is a risk of disruption to transport.
The chief forecaster said: “The snow is likely to accumulate in places, especially over hills, given the cold ground surfaces.
“Given the finely-balanced nature of the situation, even at this stage details remain very uncertain regarding the extent and amount of snowfall, in particular the northward extent into northern England.
“Indeed some areas will miss the snow altogether.”
