A COUNCILLOR is being investigated after allegedly making ‘vile’ comments to police officers.

The officers attended the house of Tyldesley Cllr Robert Bleakley on January 14 at his request but left after he allegedly made the comments.

Ch Sup Donnellan, Police Commander for Wigan and Bolton, filed a complaint against Cllr Bleakley on Monday and Wigan Council is now investigation the allegations.

He said: “I have made this complaint and asked that the strongest of sanctions be applied. He has abused his position and brought his office into disrepute, his comments were frankly vile. His comments reveal him to be a thoroughly unpleasant and nasty character.

“There can be no doubt that he made the comments to pour scorn on the plight of innocent victims of serious criminals. I have had to put in place special measures to ensure that other officers who may have to deal with him are sufficiently selected and protected.”

Wigan Council confirmed that Cllr Bleakley has been informed about the complaint and has 22 working days in which to comment.

Wigan Council leader, Lord Peter Smith, said: “I am sickened by the comments attributed to Cllr Bleakley by the police which, if proven, are unforgivable.

“His alleged actions highlight his complete disregard for the fantastic work that our police service does. On behalf of Wigan Council I would like to apologise to the officers concerned. We will ensure that this complaint is dealt with through our standards process and support the police with any further action they wish to take.”

Cllr Bleakley was unavailable for comment.
