A BACUP primary school issued a warning after a child was involved in a “near miss” yesterday morning.

Thorn Primary School, in Cowtoot Lane, sent a text message to parents after a female motorist reversed into a child before driving off without stopping shortly after 9am.

A spokeswoman for Lancashire Police said: “We were called at 9.20am to reports of a car reversing and hitting a child. The call did not come through as a road traffic collision (RTC) but as a road-related offence.The child has not been hurt but the driver left vehicle has driven off.

“Officers will now be looking for witnesses.”

School office manager Melanie Hollows said staff had been made aware of a “near miss” involving a child through a telephone call from a member of the public.

However, it was not known whether the youngster was a pupil at the school, and the caller did not manage to note the vehicle’s registration number, or its make or model.

The school’s message read: The incident has occurred on Cowtoot Lane today involving a car reversing and a child.“Please be cautious at all times when driving near school. Thank you.”

The vehicle, described as a small sky blue coloured car, is believed to have been driven by a woman.

A spokeswoman for Bacup Nursery School, also in Cowtoot Lane, said staff had not been made aware of an incident.

Their children were all in nursery by 8.30am, she added.

Witnesses have been asked to call police on 101 with any information.
