A BAR in Accrington will learn next week whether it has been successful in its bid to keep its doors open until dawn.

Baileys in Church Street has applied to vary its licence in order to play music until 6am, and to open until 6.30am from Thursday to Saturday.

Several objections were lodged with the council, including one from the police that has now been withdrawn following discussions with the application.

Sgt Jason Middleton, had said in his objection: “There are concerns the licensing objectives of crime and disorder, and public safety, will be undermined if the application is allowed in its current format.

“The grounds for the objection relate to the proposed close time being slightly later than those of similar premises, which could encourage irresponsible drinking.”

However, he told the Lancashire Telegraph yesterday: “[My objection] has been withdrawn. It has been only done in the last couple of days. Since the objection went in, I have had meetings with solicitors and the applicant and my concerns have been allayed.

“They have agreed to a number of conditions relating to CCTV, Challenge 25, and the use of door staff. They have been tightened.”

Councillors Joan Smith, Joyce Plummer, Chris Fisher, Wendy Dwyer, and Kathleen Pratt also objected, voicing concerns over noise and crime.

Cllr Plummer, who signed her letter of objection as chair of licensing, said: “Music until 6am is inconsiderate to residents, who will possibly have to get up for work on Friday and Saturday mornings.”

Documents show the bar also wants to open until 6am on a bank holiday Monday, Christmas Day, December 27, and New Year’s Day.

The company said in its application: “The premises will operate a Challenge 25 scheme whereby any person who appears to be under the age of 25 shall not be served alcohol unless they produce an acceptable form of ID.

“An incident book will be kept to record all incidents of disorder, damage to property and personal injury at the premises.”

A final decision will be made by councillors on the licensing sub-committee when they meet at 2pm next Thursday, at Scaitcliffe House in Ormerod Street, Accrington.

A spokesman for Baileys declined to comment.
