STUDENTS from Westleigh High School in Leigh will take over the Leigh Centurions v Whitehaven match to raise awareness of breast cancer.

The event is part of a new skills programme run by the Kingstone Press Championship club’s community partners, Leigh Community Trust.

The programme aims to increase the employability of 250 13-19 year old residents within Leigh by providing better access to opportunities to improve qualifications and life skills.

As part of the project, students have been undertaking an enterprise qualification in which they have to design and implement an event.

The event is a first for a Championship club, to allow a group of 13 and 14-year-old children design, implement and deliver the entertainment and promotion of one of their matchdays.

At the match on March 28, fans have been asked to dress in pink to support Breast Cancer Awareness and matchday sponsor Audi have also got behind the campaign and will be have a bright pink A1 at Leigh Sports Village to promote the day.

The match kicks off at 1pm at Leigh Sports Village and there will also be a number of activities outside the stadium, including Westleigh High’s live Soul band and dancers, bouncy castles and an F1 simulator.

Skye Mountford, a Year 9 pupil from Westleigh High School, said: “It’s a charity that is close to me personally and to a lot of people in the local community. It would be great to see the people of Leigh get behind this great cause and help support the team.”
