A TEACHER from Bedford High School has been suspended after alleged 'inappropriate behaviour'.

Science teacher Peter Sugden was suspended from his post at Bedford High School following allegations dating back to 2013.

Mr Sugden has taught science, physics, biology and chemistry at the school since September 2012 and is the department's lead practitioner.

Helen Phillips, headteacher at Bedford High School, said: "In response to allegations of inappropriate behaviour while in a position of trust a teacher has been suspended pending an investigation.

"The allegations do not concern current students at the school and as the investigation is ongoing it is inappropriate to comment any further.

"The allegations have only recently come to light and the school has taken action as soon as possible."

Before taking the post of science teacher at Bedford High School the 34-year-old previously worked at Urmston Grammar school as a biology teacher.

He has also worked at Levenshulme High School for Girls, Cheadle Hulme High School and The Barlow RC High School.

He began teaching in 2004 after studying at The University of Manchester.

Greater Manchester Police said officers were investigating the reports of inappropriate behaviour.

A representative for GMP said: "The reports relate to incidents that took place in the summer of 2013.

"The investigation is ongoing and due to sensitive nature and lines of enquiry, it would not be appropriate to comment further."
