COUNCIL bosses have confirmed the arrival date for nearly 40 new pieces of equipment which will provide a fresh outlook for Darwen Leisure Centre this summer.

Leisure chiefs are spending nearly £70,000 in replacing half of the machines at the town centre gym.

And in order to accommodate the new arrivals, the exercise area will be closed off to patrons all day on Monday, June 29, and until 5pm the following day.

The temporary closure will bring an end to an eight-week installation schedule, including erection of the equipment and delivery for the new arrivals, which cover a range of cardio-vascular and weight resistance exercises.

Five new rowing machines had already been purchased in addition, and repairs have been carried out to a further 13 pieces of equipment located elsewhere at the facility.

Regular user and Sunnyhurst ward Labour councillor Brian Taylor, said previously: "This is a very popular gym at a very popular leisure centre and a lot of people like me will be very pleased. This new equipment will help keep Darwen fit and healthy."

The pools at the centre, on The Green, are also being closed on Saturday, and Sunday, June 27 and 28, for a swimming gala.

Today there are 2,600 members belonging to the centre.
