A LEIGH man has died in a car crash.

The accident happened on the A579, close to the junction of Sandy Brow Lane, Croft, near Warrington at 12.10pm on Thursday and involved two vehicles, a DAF truck van and a Nissan car.

A spokesman for the Northwest Ambulance Service said three ambulances were called to the scene to deal with the casualties and one person was taken to Warrington Hospital.

But police have since confirmed that a 62-year-old man from Leigh was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the van was uninjured.

As a result of the incident the A579 Winwick Lane was closed in both directions between the M6 junction 22 and Newton Road, Golborne, causing major delays for motorists.

It was later reopened.

Police are now appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
