THE streets of Atherton were filled with colour as residents converged on the town for the annual carnival.

The carnival brought together a wide range of community organisations and residents, with attractions including a fairground, face painting and classic cars as well as the main parade which led on to Meadowbank playing field.

This year the parade took a slightly different route and was able to take Market Street by storm with the community turning out in the hundreds to support the event.

Fans of the hit children’s film Frozen enjoyed a visit from stars Anna and Elsa, who joined the parade and held a meet and greet event alongside friends from the Wacky Warehouse, Wendy and Wesley meanwhile Elvis was on hand with his Cadillac and singing tales

The parade also included Wigan Ukulele Band, the surrounding Atherton schools and Golborne prize band.

Also drawing the crowds was the bulldog display team, who performed an amazing acrobatic routine, and a display of musical performances.

Catherine Lane one of the organisers of the carnival said: "It seemed that everyone had come out to support the community day as the streets were lined with people clapping and cheering us on.

"All in all this was one of the most successful of Atherton carnivals and a sign that our community really do know how to pull together to make a fun day and support each other.

"Carnival organisers Brian and Eileen Seddon work hard all year on this event with the help of their committee and it's all about putting the community spirit back into Atherton.

"We would like to thank Wigan and Leigh homes and Bent and Bongs beer festivals for their continued sponsorship and also Atherton fire brigade for their work on the day and a big thank you to all the local businesses for their many donations to the raffle this year which included a bike as first prize.

"Most of all I think the people of Atherton would like to thank Eileen and Brian for bringing this yearly event back to Atherton."
