POLICE are investigating a cannabis farm found in the upstairs bedroom of a house in Lowton.

The farm, which is believed to consist of around 20 plants, was found after fire crews were called by neighbours after being alerted by a smoke alarm.

Two fire engines attended from Leigh, Atherton and Warrington were they found a small electrical fire.

The plants were found in the bedroom of the terraced house on Newton Road, Lowton.

Fire crews used breathing apparatus and hoses to tackle the fire and they were on the scene for an hour and 50 minutes.

After the crew secured the house they requested the police.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "We were called just after 6am to a house in Newton Road.

"We found a small number of cannabis plants in the bedroom of the house.

"No one was in the property at the time and investigations are still ongoing."
