Students across Leigh are receiving their GCSE results today.

Reporter Kate McMullin is out and about chatting to students at Fred Longworth High School in Tyldesley, St Mary’s High School in Astley, Bedford High School in Leigh and Westleigh High School in Leigh.

Head girl Rebecca Williams, aged 16, from Westleigh High School, achieved 10 A* and 3 A.

She said: “I want to go to Winstanley College to do French, physics, English literature and maths.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time at Westleigh.

“The people and teachers have all been great and really friendly.

“And I got to be head girl which was just brilliant and gave me a lot more confidence to get up and speak in front of people.”

Nationally, the proportion of GCSEs awarded at least a C grade has risen again this year, but top grades have fallen for the fourth year in a row, official figures show.

In total, almost seven in 10 (69%) entries were awarded A*-C, up 0.2 percentage points on 2014.

But there was a 0.1 percentage point drop in A* grades - the fourth year running that there has been a fall - with 6.6% of entries given the highest mark this year.
