A BRAVE schoolgirl who is fighting cancer for a second time is urging Leigh Race for Life participants to make their sponsorship cash make a difference.

Georgia Kelly has been VIP guest twice at Race for Life Leigh and also launched the “Cancer Slam” warm-up exercises for participants last summer.

She is now urging women who took part in the events at Bolton and Leigh over the summer to return their sponsorship money as soon as possible to help beat cancer.

A total of 1,265 women took part in Race for Life Leigh in June and so far an amazing £65,000 has been returned in sponsorship. But it is hoped that the Leigh event will hit the £70,000 target.

A total of 870 women took part in Race for Life Bolton in May and have so far returned £44,000 in sponsorship. But it is hoped that the Bolton event will hit the £70,000 target.

Georgia's parents, Karen and Phil Kelly, from Daisy Hill, Westhoughton, had already suffered heartache after losing their first child Jamie at the age of just three weeks when he was born prematurely.

Karen, who is a paediatric nurse, had only just lost her dad, Sam Wood, to oesophageal cancer months previously to Georgia being diagnosed.

Georgia, her mum Karen and a gang of friends and family called “Team Georgia” took part in Race for Life at Leigh in June and enlisted more than 30 participants for their team.

Karen, aged 39, said: “We are huge fans of Race for Life as it has made such a positive difference in Georgia’s fight and we are so touched that she has played such a big part in the Leigh event over the past few years.

“But we really need to urge women to return the sponsorship cash to make the lasting difference for people like Georgia who are fighting the disease right now.”
