Readers' pictures of the Vulcan bomber over Bolton and Leigh from October 10 2015

The Cold War era aircraft flew over over Westhoughton, Atherton and Tyldesley on Saturday as part of a farewell trip around Britain.

The famous Vulcan roar was heard, possibly for the last ever time, over the towns around 3pm on October 10.

The iconic delta winged plane passed by en route between Warton Aerodrome, Preston and Barton City Airport, Manchester.

The flight was among the last that Vulcan XH558 will make before it is finally retired before the end of the month.

XH558 was restored to airworthy condition by the Vulcan to the Sky charity, but its age and high number of accumulated flying hours have seen partners withdraw technical support for the aircraft.

Vulcan – the last airworthy example of Britain’s ‘V Force’ – later headed to Woodford aerodrome, near Stockport, where the aircraft were designed and built by Avro.

Alongside the Valiant and Victor aircraft, Vulcans carried Britain’s nuclear deterrent before it transferred to submarines.
