DEMENTIA Charity Good Deeds Trust will be one of the services on offer at new community hub in Atherton Town Hall.

The charity, which gives advice and support for those living with dementia, has been supported by Wigan Council's Dementia Friendly Communities project, which is a pilot as part of The Deal.

Currently run from Atherton Library the charity were looking to expand in order to further progress the charity, which has made 'Guardian Angel Devices'.

The devices, made by Connect Tech, come in the form of a wristband, keyring, zipper tag and badge and allow members of the public to use their phones in a contactless method to scan the device.

The 'Tap Your Phone To Get Them Home' method will then give them the name and an emergency contact number of the person who is in need of help.

Mark Aldred from Good Deeds Trust said, "Again Wigan Council have shown that they offer long term support to people living with dementia in our borough.

"They supported our Guardian Angel Devices with The Deals Dementia Friendly Communities Project as a pilot, which has gone from strength to strength and is spreading throughout Greater Manchester and Lancashire.

"We also run dementia cafes in Atherton Library and approached the council, due to the cafes being a success and outgrowing the library, with a view for expansion and are pleased with the officers response.

"It's an exciting prospect for us all moving together under one roof."

The hub will be the new home for Atherton Library as well as a ‘Life Centre’ where people will be able to speak to the council’s staff and partners for general help and advice.

There will also be health services in the hub, such as smoking cessation and weight advice, along with community groups and services such as family support, employment advice, online courses and support for the elderly, among others.

Anyone with dementia in the borough can receive two free Guardian Angel devices and a free fire safety check from GM Fire and Rescue service by contacting: 01942 888990.

The dementia cafe's are held every third Friday of the month from 10am until 12.
