A WOMAN who admitted handling more than £1,000 worth of food and cleaning products from Atherton and Leigh Foodbank has been jailed.

Michelle Chasle, aged 39, of Portland Road, Walkden, was imprisoned for 12 weeks.

She was found guilty of handling stolen goods in connection with the disappearance of £1,322.66 of produce belonging to Atherton and Leigh Bank on February 15 last year.

Food bank co-ordinator Warren Done did not wish to comment further but the theft relates to donated supplies stolen from the food bank’s storage container, located behind St John the Baptist Church in Market Place, Atherton.

It was reported at the time that volunteers from the food bank followed a trail of detergent back to a home and alerted police, who made two arrests.

Chasle, who used to live in Warburton Place, Atherton, was jailed on January 7 at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates’ Court having been convicted of handling stolen goods following a trial at the same court in July last year.
