A LEGENDARY Leigh band will be raising funds for Wigan and Leigh Hospice in their annual charity performance on May 7.

Popular 60s band The Pressmen have performed an annual charity bash every year since reforming in 1997.

This year's event will be held at Leigh Miners Welfare Institute with support coming from top Leigh DJ Bobby Dee.

Gary Woodward, who helps the band set up the annual fundraising gigs, said: “The group have always been popular in their home town of Leigh and it promises to be a great night which will hopefully raise much-needed funds for the hospice."

The band was formed in 1962 and appeared at famous venues including The Cavern in Liverpool and the Esquire Club and the Mojo Club in Sheffield, which was owned by Peter Stringfellow.

The original band members were Harold Taylor, Kenny White, Ronnie Stevens, Jim Yates, Bernard Southern and Eric White, who went by the name The Silhouettes.

In late 1962 Malc Hurst and Tony Owens joined the band and they were renamed as The Pressmen.

Gary added: “They are still such a typical 1960s band. They were around with the likes of The Beatles and were really popular in the 60s and 70s."
