WIGAN and Leigh Hospice has received a £500 donation from the Queen's private estate.

The Mayor of Wigan Borough Cllr Ron Conway applied for the funding from the Duchy of Lancaster, which is owned by the Queen as the current Duke of Lancaster.

Cllr Conway, who chose the hospice as the charity he will raise money for in his term of office, said: “We are extremely thankful for this donation from the Duchy of Lancaster Benevolent Fund.

“The £500 received will help Wigan and Leigh Hospice carry out its care to the best of its ability.”

Lady Joy Smith, High Sherriff of Greater Manchester, presented Cllr Conway with the cheque on Tuesday.

She said: “It is an honour to represent the Duchy of Lancaster in this way.

“The hospice is such a fantastic cause. I am confident that the donation will help to support its professional and compassionate work and the people who are reliant on its services.”
