A LEIGH man is set to star in a BBC documentary going behind the scenes at Kellogg’s cereal factory after working for the company for 43 years.

The first episode of BBC Two’s Inside The Factory: How Our Favourite Foods Are Made will air later this year with the Manchester-based factory – which is the largest cereal factory in Europe – featuring in an episode.

MasterChef’s Gregg Wallace and Cherry Healey will visit the iconic factory responsible for making one million packs of Corn Flakes, Coco Pops, Rice Krispies and Crunchy Nut every day.

Jimmy Carney, from Leigh, will be one of the people in front of the camera after working for the cereal giant for 43 years.

The 60-year-old said: “I can’t foresee myself retiring to become an extra on Coronation Street any time soon.

“Being on the show made me feel incredibly nervous, the final day of filming was probably the hardest in all my years at the company.

“I’ve warned my family that I was nervous, so when they watch the show I’ll probably go and wash the dishes and await their verdict.

“Gregg definitely realised I was out of my comfort zone and was very understanding and considerate.”

Jimmy started working at Kellogg’s in 1973 at the age of 18 as both of his parents had worked there previously.

“When I started I already felt as though I knew the place because I knew a lot of the people.

“The great thing about the factory is that we are all in it together regardless of our position in the company. I’m not afraid to tell it like it is.

“I persuaded management to install a feed centre, which means we do not send food to landfill – it saved the company millions of pounds – it is my proudest achievement.

“Sooner or later I’ll retire but at present I enjoy work too much.”
