SCHOOLS out for summer but changes are coming in September for three Leigh primary schools.

Leigh CE Infant School, Leigh CE Junior School and St John’s CE Infant School will all become primary schools after the summer holidays, teaching children from the ages of four through to 11.

This means that the pupils at the schools will be in the same school until they move to high school instead of moving up to a junior school after year two.

Leigh CE Infants School on Walmesley Road will become Leigh St Mary's CE Primary while Leigh CE Junior School on Henrietta Street will become Leigh CE Primary School, with both accepting children of all primary school ages.

Leigh St John’s Infant School on Kirkhall Lane will also become Leigh St John’s CE Primary School.

Alan Lindsay, assistant director for education at Wigan Council, said: “Work is to be complete in time for the new academic year on three schools in Leigh to enable them to become through schools so that they can cater for children from four to 11.

“This means these schools will now be in line with all other primary schools in the Wigan Council local authority area.

“Once children are admitted at reception there will now be no need for them to transfer until they are of secondary age.

“We believe that this continuity of primary education gives stability and supports effective learning outcomes for all pupils, as there are no changes of school between Key Stages 1 and 2."
