SPECIALIST lifting equipment was needed to rescue an obese man with breathing difficulties from his Atherton flat after paramedics called firefighters to help.

Shortly after 2pm on Monday, Atherton fire crews were called to a flat in High Street after the North West Ambulance Service asked for assistance.

The man, who is reported to have weighed between 48 and 50 stone, was suffering chest problems and paramedics were unable to get him out of the front door.

During a two-hour rescue firefighters had to remove a window to get him out of the flat.

The man was then taken to hospital.
