AN MP is campaigning to instate traffic calming measures on a road in Atherton.

Bolton West MP Chris Green says speed cameras, bollards and traffic lights should be considered for Tyldesley Road 'as a matter of urgency' following a serious crash there at 3pm on Sunday, August 14.

A driver collided with a row of terraced houses and three parked cars at high-speed and fled the scene before emergency services arrived.

Luckily no-one was injured but residents were advised to stay indoors following damage to an external gas supply and the road was closed for an hour.

Mr Green said: "A number of Tyldesley Road residents have got in touch with me after this latest incident.

"Residents shouldn’t have to put up with dangerous drivers speeding through a residential area, which is why I’ve contacted both the council and police asking that traffic calming measures are considered as a matter of urgency.

“One resident has told me that there were plans a few years ago for a pedestrian crossing close to the bend where most of the incidents happen, which would involve putting bollards in the middle of the road and slow down traffic.

"Other residents have suggested traffic lights at the junction with Tyldesley Old Road and speed cameras.

"All of these options must be considered."

Mark Tilley, assistant director for infrastructure at Wigan Council, said: “We take the safety of motorists and pedestrians very seriously.

"We regularly review roads across the borough as to the suitability for any additional measures to reduce the risk of incidents.

"Additional traffic calming measures are installed based on meeting certain criteria.”
