A MAN from Lowton met up with his sporting heroes at a fundraising golf event to give a speech about cancer awareness.

Duncan Cathie, 20, shared his own personal experience of being diagnosed with a brain tumour at 16-years-old, to help raise vital funds for the CLIC Sargent charity, which is the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people, and their families.

The event, which is in its 19th year, saw sporting stars compete to raise the funds including; five time Olympic gold rower Sir Steve Redgrave, former British Olympic swimmer, Mark Foster, former professional footballer Lee Dixon, English cricketer Mark Ramprakash and former English test cricketer Mark Butcher.

Duncan said: “When I was ill I had amazing support from CLIC Sargent, who helped me to make new friends and further myself by putting me in contact with other people going through the same things as me.

“Before my diagnosis I was always very sporty and I am a big sports fan in general so it was great to meet all the familiar faces and share my experiences with them.”

TV presenter, Chris Hollins, who hosted the event, added: “Meeting people like Duncan shows just how vital the CLIC Sargent’s financial, practical and emotional support is for young people like him and their families.

“It was great to see everyone get together during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month to have fun on the golf course whilst raising funds for this worthy cause.

The celebrity golf day was held at the Sunningdale Golf Club in Berkshire.
