POLICE are investigating a spate of attacks on buses in Leigh by stone wielding yobs.

The yobs, who were caught on CCTV, first targeted a Jim Stones bus on Nel Pan Lane on November 15 smashing windows.

Reports suggest that other buses in the area, were also targeted last Thursday, November 24, including the 658 Stagecoach bus.

In a statement Jeanette Dyson, a manager at Jim Stones said: "Something has to be done to stop this

“Its just getting totally out of control, a group of youths are just targeting buses in a very small area in the evenings.

"Three were targeted, and now all the buses in Leigh are going to want to avoid the area if this keeps happening. These people are evil and have no consideration for the damage they could have caused others."

She added: "The damage to us has cost £1,000 on a new bus that had only been on the road for around three days so it will be around £10,000 in total for the 8 windows that were damaged, possibly by the same youths, just 10 days apart and nothing is being done.

Mrs Dyson said she had been in contact with the MP Andy Burnham and Leigh police in the hope that patrols could be stepped up.

A Stagecoach spokesman said: "The window of a vehicle on our 658 service was damaged in an incident on Nel Pan Lane at 9.30pm on Thursday 24 November. There were no reported injuries.

"Passenger safety is our upmost priority at Stagecoach and we are assisting Greater Manchester Police with the investigation.”

The CCTV shows alleged vandals hiding on the lane behind Glover Street and Garden Vale.

As the Journal went to press, it was awaiting a response from Leigh Police.
