A MOTHER undergoing treatment for cancer is raising money for a charity which helped her to break the news about her disease to her daughter.

Cath Quigley, of Priestfields, Leigh, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in February, was struggling to find a way to tell 10-year-old daughter Eve about her disease before she saw a book produced by Breast Cancer Care called Mummy’s Lump.

The book, which is written for children, has a story which explains the different stages a mother goes through after being diagnosed with cancer.

Mother-of-two Cath, who had an operation to remove a lump from her body at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust following her diagnosis, has raised more than £2,300 since April 5 through a Justgiving page to raise money for Breast Cancer Care- seven times more than the £300 target she set.

Cath, 53, said: “No-one should have to tell their 10-year-old daughter they have cancer and the thought of it horrified me until I found the book.

“As the charity’s book and advice has helped us as a family so much I wanted to raise awareness of it and generate money for them as they rely heavily on donations.

“Obviously it was a shock when I found out I had cancer and one of the first things I done was to tell my friends to check if they had lumps because they can be easily missed.”

Leigh Carnival committee treasurer Cath has been advised by doctors that her chances of beating the disease are ‘looking good’ as it was detected in the early stages.

She recently had her first session of chemotherapy and has more rounds scheduled as well as radiotherapy up until December.

Cath, who also has an older daughter Rochelle, 28, had her hair shaved off on Wednesday in a show of resistance.

As someone who always has a positive outlook on life, Cath has been posting light-hearted photographs of herself wearing different hats on social media since her haircut.

She said: “It was important to chop my hair off because I did not want the chemotherapy to control everything about me.

“It has made me feel on top of the world.”

Husband Karl overcame Hodgkin’s Lymphoma 26 years ago, with treatment also at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, and Cath has vowed the ‘warrior-like’ spirit she possesses will make sure she beats her cancer.

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School Parent Teacher Association secretary Cath has been ‘overwhelmed’ with the generosity and support she has received from friends and family with floods of offers available to provide care for herself and Eve during her treatment.
