A SECOND protest against the building of houses on greenbelt land has taken place ahead of a full council meeting.

Three tractors circled Wigan Town Hall from 5pm on Wednesday, April 19 in a protest against the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework (GMSF) housing development which could see around 25,000 homes built in the borough by 2035.

Campaigners waved banners and canvassed councillors in the street to reject the current format of GMSF which follows a protest that was carried out at the same place in January.

Spokesman Mark Bradley said: “I am immensely encouraged by the interaction from many of the councillors from all sides of the political divide.

“Following our peaceful protest in January when we congregated inside the council building, I am disappointed today that we have been banished to the streets as though we are a bunch of rowdy troublemakers.”

The tractors were provided by Gillian Morris who worked alongside campaigners Eileen Rigby and Tony McManus to ensure the protest went ahead.

Campaign groups set up across the borough include No to South Hindley Urban Village, Pennington Save Our Greenbelt and Mort Lane Against GMSF.
