A MAN who became the youngest head teacher in the country seven years ago has returned to his former school with words of inspiration for its pupils.

James Haseldine, who graduated from Bedford High School in Leigh in 1993, was appointed head at Stretford High School at the age of 32 in 2010.

He returned to Bedford High as guest of honour at the school’s annual Celebration Evening last Thursday, which saw 60 students given awards for their achievements over the past year.

Abigail Holdsworth and Rebecca Knowles shared The Steve Preston (To Care) Award, Maiya Libby was presented with The Harry Cartledge (To Learn) Award and Keanu Libby picked up The Barrie Mell (To Achieve) Trophy.

Mr Haseldine, who gave an inspirational speech at a packed upper school hall, said: “It was a privilege to be invited back to Bedford after 24 years to help celebrate the achievements of such talented young people.

“The will of the students to succeed is infectious."

The two-hour event also included a musical performance by students Natalie Kamhiriri and Fay Southwood.

Bedford High head teacher Helen Phillips said: “Our students impress me every single day with their contributions to school and the kindness and respect they show to others.

“They also work very hard with the support of their teachers and families.

“That ethos of not giving up when things get tough is often the difference between success and failure.”
