A POETRY group set up at a residential care home is proving to be a big hit with residents.

The Poetry Corner at Golborne House on Derby Road sees members take it in turns to read poems before discussing them and their themes.

One resident, Mary Brookes, has even started writing her own poems to read out, reigniting a previous passion for the form of expressive literature.

Golborne House activities co-ordinator Elizabeth Bates said: “I have been amazed by the way residents have engaged with the group and the energising effect it has had on our members.

“It gives me a real buzz to organise.

“The group has also been a great reminiscence tool, as residents remember poems from their past and frequently bring them in for the group to read.

“It evokes lots of memories and emotions.

“It has been a joy to be able to read the wonderful poetry written by Mary too.”

Elizabeth underwent training to become a registered facilitator before founding the group, which meets in a cosy lounge at the home every Monday.

It is organised in association with The Reader; a charitable organisation which aims to improve people’s lives by connecting them with literature.

As well as care homes, the charity organises in schools, workplaces and even prisons.
