A FIREMAN is fighting for his life in a Spanish hospital after suffering multiple injuries within six hours of landing in Magaluf for his stag do.

Dad-of-one Alex Green was discovered unconscious in the street with a bleed on the brain, fractures to his eye sockets, cheeks and nose, broken ribs and a collapsed lung.

The 26-year-old was placed in an induced coma and remains in intensive care after undergoing surgery in a hospital in Majorca.

His fiancée Rebecca Thorpe has flown out to be with him and his friends have set up a JustGiving page to raise funds for his hospital treatment.

More than £27,000 has been donated so far, including from strangers, and an event to raise further funds has been arranged at The Millstone pub on Harvey Lane in Golborne, taking place from 2.30pm on Saturday.

Alex's cousin Rebecca Green has made an emotional appeal for funds on social media.

She said: "It absolutely breaks my heart that I'm reading a story like this about my wonderful cousin Alex Green.

"Please read and share and make any donations possible so we can get him back home with the best possible treatment.

"He truly is the nicest, funniest gentleman you'll ever meet."

Alex is due to marry Rebecca in December. They have a two-year-old son, Zach.

Rebecca's cousin Brooke Millington posted: "Please spare any money you have, no matter how big or small, to help support my beautiful cousin and her wonderful fiancé through this awful time.

"Please help to get him the care he needs and to come home."

Alex travelled to Majorca with a group of 25 family members and friends on Friday.

When the group became concerned that he had failed to return from the toilets in a bar they frantically searched for him before receiving a phone call from someone who had found him unconscious in the street with severe facial injuries.

It is not clear what happened to Alex and there is not thought to be any CCTV cameras in the area he was found in.

Spanish newspaper Diario de Mallorca claims a police probe has ruled out a violent assault being responsible for Alex’s injuries.

It says Spanish police are investigating a theory that he fell from an old hotel site where a new hotel and shopping centre is being built.

Due to the extent of his injuries, Alex is expected to be in intensive care, at a cost of around £5,000 a day, for some time.

His family and friends fear his travel insurance will not be valid to cover his extensive medical costs as he had been drinking alcohol prior to suffering his injuries.

The JustGiving page set up for Alex says: “All donations are simply to cover the cost of his care and see him return home safely to his adored son Zach.

“Any amount of donation would be greatly appreciated and we will be forever grateful of.

“He is surrounded by family and friends who love him and pray he pulls through this in the best way possible.

“Please say a prayer for him too.”

The British Embassy is in contact with Alex's family and the Fire Brigades Union has pledged to do whatever it can to help.

Union officials have said they are looking to see if Alex can benefit from the Firefighters 100 Lottery, which supports firefighters who are injured while at work.

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said: “We are assisting the family of a British man who was taken to hospital in Mallorca on Saturday.

“We are in contact with the Spanish police and medical services.”

Alex is a former Golborne High School pupil who has played for Golborne Parkside Amateur Rugby League Football Club.

He now lives in Littleborough and works in Rochdale and is an avid Wigan Warriors fan.

The fundraising event on Saturday has been arranged to coincide with the televised Wigan versus Wakefield match, which kicks off at 3.15pm.

Posting on Facebook, Craig Ashall said: "I have managed to organise a fundraising event at The Millstone pub in Golborne this Saturday.

"It would be greatly appreciated if any raffle prizes could be donated to raise as much money as possible to help both Becky and his son Zach get him home."

The event is open to all and raffle prizes can be dropped off at the pub.
