THE Leigh Spinners Mill project has been nominated for an award for its fundraising efforts.

The volunteers-led restoration project has been shortlisted for a BRICK award from the Prince's Regeneration Trust after securing £940,000 from 15 sources in the last three years.

In that time, three phases of restoration have been completed at the site; the engine house, learning space and heritage centre.

There are two mills at the Park Lane development, which are known as Mill one and Mill two.

A major funding application is set to be submitted this year to open Mill one to the public by the end of 2020.

Chair of the Leigh Building Preservation Trust Peter Rawlinson, which runs the project, said: "Our ambitious plans are increasingly being recognised on a national stage and I am proud to be associated with what is probably the largest community-led project in the North West."

The winner of the award will be announced after a two day conference in London which takes place on February 21 and 22.

Restoration of Mill two's lift is also due to start this month and the sports floor, which will include indoor bowling and table tennis, is expected to be ready for people to use in time for the Heritage Open weekend event in September.

Volunteers are planning a range of education and training activities this year as well.
