LEIGH Model Railway Society got back on track at the weekend with its 35th exhibition since the first one at Bedford Church School in 1977.

The group has missed only one year – 2011 – and on Saturday and Sunday it was back in business featuring impressive layouts including Liverpool Model Railway Society’s Dolgellau display and exhibits from Cheshire, Derbyshire and the north west.

The exhibition in St Joseph’s Hall went down well with the organisers and visitors.

“It was home from home, perfect and in an ideal location,” said Leigh MRS stalwart Gerald Bent, who recalls those first days at Bedford Church School, followed by the shows at the Turnpike Centre, Lowton Civic Hall and Westleigh High School.

“In the early days we had in the region of 2,000 visitors.

“It isn’t as big now, but we were able to make a small profit.”

The society’s headquarters are in Milk Street, Tyldesley, and members’ projects include a layout based on a colliery site with a canal alongside – similar to at Astley Green.

Members of the society range from the late 20s to the mid-70s.

Anyone with an interest in railway modelling is welcome to chat to the club elders if they have an interest in joining, which should appeal to anyone with joinery, electrical, scenery design or building skills.
