AIRBRUSHED photographs of glamorous women should be labelled to let readers know the pictures have been “touched up”, a new campaign in Bolton will say.

The “Not Airbrushed” campaign — set to be launched by Gemma Aitchison, sister of murdered Bolton teen Sasha Marsden — will call on magazines and newspapers to make it clear when images have been digitally altered.

Ms Aitchison says young girls are risking their health by bleaching their skin to try to replicate the airbrushed looks of models and celebrities.

She said: “The idea is that companies have to label pictures and say it has been airbrushed.

“In airbrushing they alter the light to change skin colour and take away weight. It creates unrealistic standards for young girls.

“There are young girls out there with bleaching kits as kids expect to get what they see in magazines.”

Ms Aitchison’s sister 16-year-old Sasha was killed in Blackpool in January, 2013.

Since her death, The 27-year-old, who lives in Westhoughton, has campaigned on issues such as domestic abuse, the objectification of women in society and the standards of sex education in schools.

She has worked closely with Bolton West MP Julie Hilling and met with Labour leader Ed MIliband in Westminster last year.

Mr Miliband signalled his intent to tackle domestic violence by appointing Seema Malhotra, who it is hoped will attend the launch of the campaign, as the shadow minister for preventing violence against women and girls.

In March, Yes Matters — a group also set up by Ms Aitchison — staged demonstrations in Bolton, Manchester and London, calling for improved sex education in schools.

On September 12, she will launch “Not Airbrushed” in the Lancaster suite at Bolton Town Hall, with a buffet and presentation for guests.

Artwork highlighting the messages of the campaign will be displayed at the launch.

These will include a moving piece produced by a former victim of domestic abuse, who wished to remain anonymous.

Guests for the launch will include Ms Hilling as well as people working with victims of abuse in the centre of Bolton.
