THE old adage – never work with animals or children – rung true for David Cameron this week.

Six-year-old Lucy Haworth rested her head on the desk and pulled a series of comical faces as the Prime Minister read to her during a visit to Sacred Heart R.C. Primary School in Westhoughton on Wednesday.

And since photographs of the encounter made the TV news bulletins and the front pages of the national newspapers – as well as that of The Bolton News – the youngster has become something of a celebrity.

On Monday, year one pupil Lucy and mum Nikki, aged 33, will be guests on daytime chat show Loose Women.

Nikki, of Collingwood Way, Westhoughton, said the reaction to “chatterbox” Lucy upstaging the PM had been “absolutely crazy”.

She said: “Lucy thinks it is brilliant, she has been going around thinking she is famous and can’t wait to go back to school as a little celebrity.

“She is counting down the days until Monday as she is so excited to be on the television.

“The response has been mad, and it has all come from one picture.

“Lucy put her head down for a split second – she said Mr Cameron said something funny while she was reading with him, so she was laughing – and the photographer just happened to capture it at that moment.”

Gymnastics-mad Lucy added: “He was a nice man. We were doing some reading together and he helped me with my reading.

“We were taking it in turns to read. It was fun.”

Mrs Haworth, a stay-at-home mum, said she and husband Brett had been inundated with phone calls from excited friends and family.

She added: “It is not every day your child gets to meet the prime minister.

“We just think it is funny – but I bet David Cameron isn’t thinking that.

“They always say, never work with animals or children.”
