A BOLTON Councillor has written to the Prime Minister to ask that he allows a “fair share” of refugees to be housed in his own constituency.

In his letter, Little Lever and Darcy Lever Cllr Sean Hornby argues that councils such as Bolton — which take in a significant number of asylum seekers and refugees — should be helped by other councils during the ongoing migrant crisis in Europe.

Addressing David Cameron personally, he writes: “The unfolding situation involving thousands of migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers is something that I have a great deal of concern about.

“Bolton, over the last few years, has taken the second highest intake of asylum seekers in the whole of the North West of England and for some time has had the sixth highest number of asylum seekers receiving housing of all local authorities in the UK.”

He added: “With this in mind, I am writing to urge you to insist that all councils across the country should take on these poor victims in these terrible situations.”

Mr Hornby penned his note as hundreds of thousands of migrants continue to flee war-torn countries such as Syria and Iraq, heading for Europe.

He added: “Only 93 local authorities agreed with the Blair/Brown Government to participate in the dispersals (of asylum seekers) — that is about one in five.

“Could you consider introducing emergency legislation which would make all local authorities do a little rather than leave it to 1 in 5 authorities take the strain?”

Referring to Home Office figures for the first quarter of 2015, UKIP Councillor Mr Hornby points out that the home constituencies of Mr Cameron (Witney), his chancellor George Osborne (Tatton) and new Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn (Islington North) currently have no asylum seekers receiving supported housing.

He wrote: “Here in Bolton there were 917 housed — could you give me some assurance that you will take your fair share in your constituency and your Chancellor will do the same, if we are in it together then please Prime Minister set a good example.”
