BOLTON Council WILL report the Conservative government to the United Nations, accusing it of breaching the rights of Bolton people.

A meeting of Bolton’s full council on Wednesday night saw a motion put forward by Harper Green Councillor Susan Haworth — asking for the action to be taken — carried.

In an impassioned speech, Cllr Haworth accused the Tory top brass of committing “heinous and unfair acts” on northern towns like Bolton in forcing people into “hardship.”

She also spoke strongly against George Osborne’s proposed cuts to working tax credits, adding: “I am fighting for Bolton this evening, the majority of Bolton isn’t rich.

“Taking money from our lowest paid families who get up in the morning and work hard every day is utterly wrong.”

Conservative group leader Cllr David Greenhalgh accepted that the tax credit cuts are “difficult” for members of his party.

He said: “As regards the sentiment behind this motion, of reducing hardship and worklessness and the aspiration to attract more secure jobs to our town — these are all aims that I, and my colleagues on this side, fully support and endorse.”

He added: “But it is the failure to run a sound economic policy that is most unkind to those struggling to make ends meet — it is not the richest who suffer when a government loses control of public finances and borrows more and spends money they don’t have.”

He added: “We can't simply continue to subsidise incomes with higher levels of welfare and tax credits that this country can't afford."

The motion was carried, however, and the council will be now contact the United Nations.
